New Gear in FFS Arms Race
While the musky community continues to debate the ethics and regulation on forward facing sonar (FFS), the tech companies are not taking their foot off the gas in the arms race.
Humminbird just announced they plan to launch a new Xplore series of fish finders along with MEGA Live 2 in early 2025.
Xplore Series:
The Xplore series will be offered in 9, 10, and 12 inch displays. They’ll be replacing the Helix line, which will be discontinued.
The Xplore series features both a touch screen and side buttons. This should make scrolling on the screen much faster without losing the quick buttons on the side. They also redesigned the interface for the touch screen, a change from the drop down menus on the Helix models.
Their new quad-core processors should allow for faster start-ups and map loading with less lag.
The Xplore’s also offer a preloaded Lakemaster card of over 13,000 lakes with 1-foot contours, meaning no more purchasing individual state or territory maps and keeping track of map cards.
You’ll also be able to sync 10,000 waypoints with customizable icons between devices, including your smartphone.
MEGA LIVE 2:
The new Mega Live 2 boasts better performance for their forward facing sonar.
Some key features are enhanced clarity and stability, improved target separation, better bait tracking, 15 optimized color palettes, and 3 view modes with TargetBoost.
There isn’t much out there for specs yet besides the sonar coverage of 20 x 120 degrees, which is the same as the original Mega Live.
The new transducer can now be mounted either side of a shaft or trolling motor and has a different appearance. Like its predecessor, there is no black box.
TargetBoost is a new feature, it enhances suspended returns to make fish and bait stand out. Having new color palettes allows users to better customize visibility for water and light conditions.
Mega Live 2 will only be compatible with it's Apex, Solix G3, and the new line of Xplore models. We haven’t seen any side-by-side comparisons with Garmin, Lowrance, or the original Mega Live. It will be interesting to see how it stacks up.
