Combing Cover
We came across some cool tips from Musky Insider PRO instructor Gord Pyzer in this Outdoors Canada article.
Here’s what Gord and his grandson Liam did to score on a recent tough bite they experienced on Canadian waters . . .
The Conditions:
“We went through a spell recently when one low pressure system after the other blew through the region, and while our muskie and pike fishing friends were all lamenting the tough bite, too, it didn’t make life feel any better”
The Locational Strategy:
"We went to the densest weeds, the heaviest current, and that's always the equalizer. Current and weeds."
The Presentation:
Interestingly enough, crankbaits such as Rapala Super Shad Raps and dive-and-rise baits including weighted Bobbie Baits were the ticket.
But possibly more important than the baits themselves, was the way they were being utilized. The baits were intentionally being ripped to make contact with the weed tops and then paused to let them rise up and clear them before the next pull.
“It is ironic, too, because crankbaits are often the last lure style muskie and pike anglers consider when they’re fishing thick weed cover, but they are ideal combs.”
Liam and Gord also had some action on lightly weighted tubes danced over the weed tops with a walk-the-dog style retrieve and a flutter down drop on the edge.
This “combing cover” program produced a trio of muskies for Gord and Liam on this particular day. Keep this game plan in mind the next time you’re ridin’ on the struggle bus.
Gord and Liam also shot a YouTube video while on this outing with more deets on combing cover which you can find right here.
Paw Patrol Musky Edition
A couple weeks ago we featured Cole Lauzon’s boat dog (Daisy) in the newsletter and asked folks to share their boat dog pics with us. Our readers did not disappoint!
There were definitely a few themes we noticed.
Theme #1
On patrol watching for follows and threats.
Mitch Zorn’s pup looks like he is on point and ready for action.
Taylor Hamel’s pup Dale Cooper is sportin’ some nice flow while on patrol.
Theme #2
Seat Warmers
Looks like Ian Veihman’s Bouder aka “Boots” is ready at the helm.
Ben Niermann’s pooch is multitasking keepin’ the seat warm while on patrol.
Theme #3
If I’m in the net, I won’t miss the action.
Jacob William Agnew’s pooch is sportin’ a patriotic stars and stripes collar while waiting on a catch.
Kevin Vender’s dog decided a nap could be taken as long as it was on the net so he didn’t miss anything.
Theme #4
The excitement of the catch!
Lynn Hotchkiss’s Kingsley always loves it when there’s a ‘skie in the bag.
Shaun Dekker’s boat dog Kota had to have a taste of the excitement. 😂
Last but not least, this little fur baby of Kyle Bissen’s appears to be a little overstimulated by the site of a musky.
You can find a bunch more boat dogs right here on our Facebook page. Share yours with us by replying to this email and you just might see your pooch in the newsletter or on our socials.
The Grinch… In July?
Topwater baits are definitely in play this month and we stumbled across this sweet Grinch creeper style bait created by Nate Marling, (Marling Baits) out of Marion, IA.
Take a look at that detail! 😍 After a little searchin’, we discovered Nate has a full YouTube video showing how he crafted the bait from start to finish along with other bait making videos.
Check out this baby musky swimbait he made.
For the basement baitmaker, or those of us that just think it’s cool to see how baits are made, you can get lost watchin’ Nate’s videos.
Check out his YouTube channel if you want to see more. He has quite the following!
This Week's Mashup:
Mashup time!
#1 – Kid gets photo op in the water with Roger the resident Lake Harriet musky.
Pam Lundell shared the photo and video on her facebook page and that’s her nephew Tyler with the fish.
From the looks of the video it was pure pandemonium and Tyler is pretty lucky he didn’t end up with a face full of hooks.
#2 – We're diggin' this cool musky metal art piece in candy green made by Dan Sheftell.
#3 –Check out this wicked waterspout on Lake Vermillion.

That would make quite the background for a fish pic! Reminds us of the Bassnado.
#4 – Ottawa River musky guide Lisa Goodier was doing a demo cast for her clients on how to work a Suick when this happened . . .
Sounds like Lisa was on ‘em that day, one of her guests caught a new PB as well . 🔥
