Dialing in the Deets
There were some juicy deets revealed during this week’s Musky Insider PRO Live Q&A session with MN guide Josh Borovsky and PA/NY guide Todd Young.
Todd talked about being able to bring his trolling program on the road to many different waters not known for trolling with great success. He also gave some great insights on trolling, speed and using your spread to dial in the pattern.
“I like to have a shallow side and a deep side of the boat with my trolling spreads. I keep things scattered and diversified until we catch two at the same depth. Then I will start cheating my spread to that depth. But, one bite doesn’t always give you the whole picture. There’s plenty of days where the first bite is on the shallow side and the next two bites come deep.”
Josh explained that while he had 14 eaters on his previous two guide trips, they were all happening in small windows of time with large periods of inactivity between them.
“The One has been the hot lure in my boat. However, a lot our success has been more about what we did with our time between the feeding windows. I am seeing a lot of daily back-and-forth movement of the fish between structure and open water."
“Once it feels like we are between windows, I ask myself what can I do to help us be more productive during the next window if we’re just killing time till the next one?”
“Sometimes part of that process is confirming where the fish are not. Fish can hide from us and our electronics when they hold tight to rock areas or bury themselves in the weeds. But, if they are on sand bottom areas, suspended off structure, or in the open water, you can verify whether they are there or not regardless of their attitude by using your electronics. This can give you a few extra customers on your milk run.”
“It’s also the key to discovering when these fish are moving back and forth so you can move with them."
There’s a lot of timely info in this session that can be applied on your next musky outing. If your a Musky Insider PRO member and you missed the live session, you can find the recording in the member portal.
If your not signed up for Musky Insider PRO yet, this is your chance to get in and have instant access to this session along with our entire library of classes and previous Q&A’s.
Minnesota State High School Muskie Championship Results
For the second year in a row, tournament participants were faced with a cold front that arrived the day before the tourney and stayed for the duration.
This year, however, the anglers caught both muskie and northern pike. In total, 3 muskies and 3 northern pike were logged during the tournament and all were caught within two tight windows during the morning and midday.
🏆 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 - 𝐀𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 who boated two of the three muskies in the event.
Aiden and Emmitt focused on rocks and scored a 47” on a bucktail during the morning window. They switched things up in the afternoon and tried weeds and had a quick flurry resulting in a 39” and a couple other lost fish. But, it was more than enough to secure the win.
The second place team of Karson and Kaden Malecha boated a 35.5” ‘skie while pullin’ Supernatural Big Baits.
Jacob Peters and Bennett Bradley rounded out the top three with a 28.25” and 25.5” pike. Congrats to the top three and all the teams that qualified!
